Our food-friendly wines complement any snack
With over 30 wineries and more than 9,000 acres of vineyards, Lake County makes a wonderful destination for a day or weekend of wine tasting. We’re happy to recommend you to some of our friends and neighbors in the area, or you can visit the Lake County Winery Association for more information.
Have a ball at our Vigilance Tasting Room
Named for all of its beautiful lakes, scenic Lake County is the perfect place to get away from it all. For fans of the great outdoors, it offers world-class fishing (especially bass!), hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, boating, and hot springs.
For culture vultures, there are incredible galleries, historic sites and artisan shops offering one-of-a-kind creations. And for those who don’t shy away from a little competition, Bocce ball is a great game to play with a wine glass in your other hand.
Make a weekend out of your visit! There are a multitude of options for staying overnight in the area—from down-to-earth campsites to luxe hotels, resorts and cozy Airbnb rentals. We recommend checking out the Lake County Visitors Bureau for suggestions.
What is the point of aging wine in barrels, anyways? Barrel aging is the step between fermentation and bottling, which matures the wine and gives it distinct flavors. Wine-making reminds us that timing really is everything!
FYI - this process normally takes between 6 to 30 months and red wines need more time than whites. We love making wine and all the fun factoids that go with it 😜

Cover crops, like the clover pictured here, are a grapevine’s best friends. Set between the rows or under the vines, they prevent the soil from eroding and supply nitrogen to the roots. This means our vines thrive and never get lonely.
Hey, what can we say? Bringing folks (and plants) together is the beating heart of of our wine-making purpose!

“LAKEPORT, CA — Clay Shannon, a forward-thinking "maverick," committed to organic farming, wildlife and land preservation, launched his wine-making enterprise, Shannon Family of Wines, in 1996 in Lake County — long before such sustainable notions were entrenched in the wine industry.”

Today is International Friendship Day! Let's pay homage to our fuzzy, helpful friends the bees.
This communal pollinator is an invaluable member of our family and ecosystem. Bees don’t pollinate the grapevines themselves, but they are essential for the plants at the base of the the grapevines. We call these cover crops, and they include Peas, Clover and Mustard among others. Cover crops help the grapevines to thrive sustainably and organically. Bees help the cover crops thrive. Now, that’s friendship!

Vigilance Tasting Room is the heart of the Shannon Family of Wines, and the perfect place to welcome our guests for pet-friendly wine tasting and picnics. We’re pretty sure after a few sips, you’ll feel like one of the family.
As of July 2022, all of Shannon Family of Wines is fully certified sustainable and organic! This makes us one of the largest organic, mountain-grown vineyards in America, and boy are we proud.
We call it Project Ovis, and it means that we are creating a fully sustainable ecosystem in our vineyards. Everything has its place, and the sheep in this photo are exactly where they are supposed to be.
The benefits of letting our flock loose in the vineyard are 2-fold: They trim the weeds & fertilize the grapevines. What an elegant alternative to chemical herbicides and fertilizers!!
